As well as taking an active role in mediating peace processes, the HD Centre carries out an extensive programme of support activities, which includes:
Sharing knowledge
The practice of mediation differs widely as each peace process and mediation effort is influenced by a unique set of circumstances. However, there are often common themes and similar types of decisions confronting mediators.
The HD Centre attempts to further the debate on the challenges facing the mediation community - by sharing best practice, including the experiences of its staff, and by conducting research on a number of substantive issues.
The HD Centre also develops practical information resources, including training material, which it makes available to the wider mediation community. It examines current humanitarian issues and draws on its experience in peacemaking and peacebuilding activities. Much of this substantial work is published, addressing key themes within the field of conflict mediation.

The HD Centre brings the relevant parties in a conflict together in an attempt to prevent civilian suffering and address their immediate needs through dialogue.
