The role of civil society in peace processes in the South and South East Asian regions
Background Paper
Formal mediation is only one component of a broader peace process. This paper examines the role of civil society organisations (CSO) in peace negotiations between governments and rebel groups that are mediated by external third parties. Soliman draws on cases in the South and South East Asian region to assess the range of direct and indirect support CSOs provide to peace processes and their positive as well as negative impacts.
