Inclusive peace processes – with meaningful participation by women, youth and civil society – help ensure that the needs of conflict parties and affected communities are addressed. Mediators who engage a diverse range of constituencies also gain access to a broader set of ideas, networks and resources to resolve conflicts.

To support this work, HD established a gender and inclusion team within the Mediation Support and Policy Directorate. The team provides technical advice and assists HD country teams in implementing gender-responsive and inclusive peacemaking approaches. It also conducts gender analysis for mediators and provides training for HD staff.

HD also develops guidance for mediation practitioners, including on gender-inclusive peacemaking and strategies for women in peace processes.
