Ceasefires are increasingly central in today’s peace processes due to the growing reluctance of conflict parties to seek comprehensive political settlements. But achieving and maintaining ceasefires is difficult without meaningful political engagement. This paper argues that mediators need to work creatively to manage violence and support peace efforts in the challenging contemporary contexts.
